The STAAR is generally designed to test and evaluate a student's measure of academic growth within the course of one school year. The vast majority of students have difficulties in Reading, which can affect how well the students perform on these tests. Grades that are affected the most are 5th and 8th, where a school can decide to withhold a student's promotional status, or placement status, keeping them in their current grade, after 3 failed attempts.
With Reading being fundamental, passing with even meeting the minimum requirements can pose a challenge. Reading comprehension and the understanding of vocabulary/grade-level terminology are the key goals in successfully passing the exam.
In-class preparation, and effective study habits outside of the classroom are vital, along with active parental involvement, and additional help with tutors, and/or after-school programs, for they are useful and furthermore, beneficial for the student. Let's remember that "Texas is one of 14 states that require students to pass an assessment to proceed to the next grade."

Different Students
Require Different
Approaches to Learning
This is one of the most truthful and prolific statements in education, "different students do require different approaches to learn effectively!" The most important idea to discover is weather the student is an audio or visual learner, then it is imperative to determine the best practices to accommodate the learner's needs. Small Groups are helpful because it is direct communication between the teacher and learners who share the same challenges; Peer discussions help to connect readers with comparing and contrasting viewpoints and perspectives; Technology integration is also a useful tool to help sustain active engagement and involvement within the classroom.
